Pick your favorite northern illinois fishery and face in its
direction. Then, turn around 180 degrees and head for lake Michigan.
The big lake may be, ironically, the best kept secret among anglers throughout
the upper midwest and for the next few months its
the best spot in Illinois waters.
Captain Tony Bovenzo (Diamond Ghost Charters.com) is a familiar
fixture at area sport shows, standing behind his high legged table,
flipping frantically through a pile of photo albums to show the quality
of the Lake Michigan Salmon and Trout fishery today.
"Today? The fishing is as good as ever." Bovenzo has been trouting for
the past three years. "these are the good old days!"
Behind him, a huge mounted lake Trout that would have been the new Illinois
state record for the species had Bovenzo not
told his crew for the day that they were actually"... Just barely over
the line into Wisconsin by the numbers."
The "numbers" refer to GPS coordinates which pin-point his boat
location within yards of its actual footprint.
Lake Michigan offers a first class fishery for coho salmon every
spring, "the former Berwyn Resident said. "Beautiful fish
just for the taking and this is one of the best times to stock your freezer
with these tasty 3 to 5 pound fish." Spring Coho are tight
to shoreline, too - within safe, easy range of even a small family fishing
boat when conditions are comfortable. Once the season
progresses and the water temps rise, the fish change locations Bovenzo
said. That is when the off-shore fishing shines.
"May brings fast action and limit catches of Coho's" he reiterated. "June
starts a mixed bag of fish, coho's, Steelhead, Brown Trout
Lake Trout and some smaller Chinook salmon. These fish range from
3 to 12 pounds. From July through August you can catch
beautiful weather on lake Michigan and enjoy excellent fishing. A time
for variety of catches, coolers bulging with chinook salmon,
Steelhead, lake trout and Trophy Brown Trout in the 15 to
30 pound class. September through October brings excellent
fishing for
chinooks and Lake Trout. This is the best time for Huge Lake Trout
in the 20 plus pound class."
Tony moors at Illinois newest facility, North Point
Marina in Winthrop Harbor on the Illinois/Wisconsin border. But this
time of
year? Even some of the old timers from Waukegan and Winthrop Harbor ferry
down to the Indiana ports to feast on some of
the finest salmon fishing of the year in Indiana's coastal waters..
